Why sea water is salty
Retold By Atin Novita Handayani
Once upon a time there lived two brothers, Husein and Hasan.
Husein was the older brother. He was a successful businessman who lived in a big luxurious house. Eventhough he had a lot of money, he never wanted to share his money with other people. Besides that, he was also greedy and mean to other people.
His brother, Hasan, was the opposite. He lived with his wife in a humble hut. Every day, he collected firewood to sell at the market. Eventhough he only earned little money from selling firewood, he was not stingy like his brother. He often gives money to people who needed it.
One day, Hasan saw an old man near the market. The old man looked sad and weak. So, Hasan came to him and asked, “You look sad. What’s the matter?” The old man said, “I am so hungry, but I don’t have have any money to buy food.” Hasan felt sorry for the man. So, he said to the old man, ”Here, take this bread. I only have this to give.” “But, what about you? What are you going to eat?” asked the old man. “It’s okay. I am going to the market to sell this firewood,” said Hasan.
The old man looked happy and thankful to Husein. He said, “ Thank you young man. You are a really good man. Here, take these mortar and pestle with you. If you hit this pestle against the mortar, you will see something coming out of this mortar. To stop it from coming out, just hit the pestle against the ground.”
After Hasan got back from the market, he told his wife his experience at the market. He tried hitting the pestle against the mortar and, suddenly, he saw something white that looked like sand coming out of the mortar. He was curious about what it was. So, he tasted it and became even more curious because he had never tested anything like it before. After a lot of the white stuff had come out of the mortar, Hasan hit the pestle against the ground and, immediately, the white stuff stopped coming out of the mortar.
Hasan did not know what to do with this white stuff. So, he asked his wife to cook with it as flavoring. When the cooking was ready, he tried it and found out that it tasted more delicious than usual. So, the next day, he went to the market to sell the white stuff. He told buyers that it could be used to add flavor to their cooking. At first, only a few of them were interested to buy the stuff. But, later on, more and more people bought it because they knew that it could really make their cooking taste more delicious. Husein finally named the white stuff salt.
And now Hasan became a rich man for selling salt. Husein, Hasan’s brother, heard about his brother becoming a rich man. So, one day he came to visit his brother. He asked Hasan where he could get the salt. Hasan told his brother about the mortar and pestle that he got from the old man. Husein was pleasantly surprised to know this. And then, he said to his brother, “Hasan, can I borrow these mortar and pestle just for one day?” “Okay, you can borrow them me and get as much salt as you want. Please return them once you are finished with them.”
Husein took the mortar and pestle home with him. He then said to himself, “Ha ha ha. My brother is such a fool. He thought that I would return these magical things to him. Certainly not! I will move to another country and take these with me. I will sell salt from the mortar there and surely be a very rich man, much richer than now.”
Husein then rushed to his boat and sailed. In the middle of the sea, he looked at the mortar and pestle that he borrowed from his brother. He was eager to try these magical things. So, he hit the pestle against the mortar and soon salt was coming out of the mortar. He felt very happy and could imagine the riches he could get from selling the salt. After getting a lot of salt, he wanted to stop the mortar. He hit the pestle against the boat floor, but the mortar would not stop. He finally remembered that he should hit the pestle against the ground to stop the mortar, but he was in the middle of the sea. He could not hit the ground with the pestle. He panicked! He did not know what to do to stop the salt from coming out. Not long after, his boat was already full of salt and it was becoming too heavy to float. In the end, the boat could not hold it any longer and it sank, taking along the mortar that kept producing salt until now.
So, that is why nowadays the sea water is salty.
